An attendant at an Assisted Living facility shared a personal story; how she had been living with a man for “a few years” when she realized that the only love that existed in their relationship was her’s. Otherwise, love was a word without meaning. She decided to end the relationship.

I said to her, that sounds a bit like…

…unrequited love.

You have heard of it, right? Unrequited love. I think it’s the worst kind of love.

Go ahead, look it up. You should get 11.8 million results with Wikipedia at the top: “Unrequited love is love that is not returned or rewarded. It is a one-sided experience that can leave us feeling pain, grief, and shame. You may think it would be easy to tell if love is unrequited but it isn’t always clear and can cause a lot of confusion and emotional turmoil.”

This is especially true when love is played out with such abandon in the culture today. People meet each other through the Internet (not that there is anything wrong with that) or they pay a service to match them up or they hook up with someone and begin using the word “love” like a pick-up line from a movie.

How do you know love is real? Are there different kinds of love? Is there anything such as serendipity, providence, or luck? Or, “falling” in love.
