What Do You Control in Life?

Sometimes our thoughts about life can take us into the weeds. This is one of those moments and let’s hope we find our way into the sunlight.

From the mind of Carl Jung, the renowned psychiatrist, came a lofty thought that might even be true:

“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.”

There are nuances when we pursue “truth” especially if you believe that it can be a paradox and exist in tension between two extremes — like living in tension between what we can and cannot control.

What do you control in life?

Start with your parents.

Did you get a vote on where you would land at your creation? I don’t think so. What was your role in your early economic situation, your education, your spiritual foundation, your health, your physical construction, your personality, your capabilities?

What journey was required of you to find that place of bliss where you are at peace with who you have become despite the circumstances of all you do not control.

Rivers offer so many great metaphors for sorting out these kind of questions in life.

As a young man, I travelled with an entourage in the springtime to Canada from Michigan to go fishing. We tried to arrive as the snow was melting away…
